LAMP Charts

  • Local Area Mobile Predictions or LAMPs are designed for communications between a base and a mobile within 1000 km or 1000 nm of a base. The charts can be used for communications between 2 mobiles that are within 1000 km or 1000 nm of the base provided they are within 1000 km or 1000 nm of each other. There is no geographical information on the chart as the one ionospheric control point is used for predictions, hence the restriction to 1000km/nm.

  • Predictions are in Universal Time (UT) and/or some other time standard.

  • Distance is shown in either nautical miles or kilometres.

  • Frequencies may be in either kilohertz (kHz) or megahertz (MHz).

  • The recommended frequency can be determined by looking up the intersection between time and distance on the chart.

  • IPS (Ionospheric Prediction Service) is a unit of the Bureau of Meteorology
