Recent Scintillation Events

The following is a list of recent periods of high and sustained ionospheric scintillation as detected in the IPS scintillation monitor network. Note that these are auto-detected and not manually quality controlled.

The location of the detected scintillation can be seen in more detail in the linked MPEG animations of the events. These locations are derived by finding where the line of sight between the GPS receiver and satellite passes through an assumed ionospheric height of 400km. As can be seen in the animations or the S4 Regional Map, these 'ionospheric pierce points' can be many hundreds of kilometres from the receiver.
