Displayed here is a near-real-time comparison of the current (observed) regional TEC map with that produced by the IRI2007 ionospheric model, using URSI climatological data (fof2, M3000). The IRI2007 model is representative of the climatological ionosphere, and hence the difference between the observed and modelled TEC (labelled 'TEC Deviation') is another indicator of ionospheric 'disturbance' levels.

The map shows colour contours of TEC in units of 1016 electrons/m2.

Model comparison

Comparison of ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) observations with physical and/or empirical models in real time enables both an ongoing evaluation of the models under a range of ionospheric conditions, as well as providing a reference point for current ionospheric conditions, since most models are largely climatological in nature.
