ANARE COSMIC RAY DATA

1. Data Rate:

IPS receives cosmic ray (neuron monitor) data from Kingston and Mawson every 5 minutes. Each file contains 5 1 minute records.

Kingston is a township and region on the outskirts of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is home to the headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division .

Mawson is situated on an isolated outcrop of rock on the coast in Mac.Robertson Land, at the edge of the Antarctic plateau. It is Australia's first continental station and the longest continuously operating station south of the Antarctic Circle.

2.Data Record Format

Cosmic Ray Data Format is the same for both stations.
Each line contains:

1. year, YYYY
2. day number, DOY
3. UTC start hour, HH
4. UTC Start Minute=20, MM
5. Counts corrected for pressure, CORCTD COUNT
6. Counts uncorrected for pressure, UNCORCTD COUNT
7. The pressure used for correct, PRESURE CRCTN USED

The corrected counts are the most useful to IPS.

Anare contact is Lloyd Simons (July 2004): Lloyd.Symons@aad.gov.au This will change with posting of winter staff in Antarctica.

3. The More Information about Cosmic Ray Data

The follwoing information is just for your reference. Data files of Average Hourly Values(e.g. MAW_YYYY_DOY_HRLYAVG.SSE) and Hourly Statistics Files (e.g. MAW_YYYY_DOY_HRLYSTAT.SSE) are not available on IPS website. For further information please address inquiries to:wdc-sts@ips.gov.au

runcrhrlysum: script that runs crhrlysum
crhrlysum: computes hourly averages 00-59 min, from day minute corrected data.

runcrevent: script that runs crevent
crevent: runs on hourly and minute cosmic ray data to detect Ground Level events and Forbosh decrease events.
MINUTE DATA fast GLE events (percentage detection)
HOURLY DATA Forbush Decrease and GLE EVENTS (Num STD DEV detection)

Follows is the description of data files that are generated from the minute files. These files are used by Forbush Decrease event detection software.

1. Average hourly values are in files : MAW_YYYY_DOY_HRLYAVG.SSE
eg file MAW_2006_030_HRLYAVG.SSE

Average and standard deviation is computed over last 72 hrs (as per paragraph 2). The alarm level is set at 5 standard deviations above and below the 72hr average value. The "recs scanned" value is the number of hourly average (as per paragraph 1) records scanned back to see if an event has occurred (upper or lower).

crevent modified on 31 Jan to report Forbush decrease event greater than 1%. (ie ignoring 1% Forbush Decreases).
