ips-aurora-alert -- Possibility of Auroral Event

About ips-aurora-alert
English (USA)

IPS Aurora Alerts provide notification of times when aurorae are more likely to be seen at more equatorial latitudes than is normal. Because the likelihood of seeing an aurora depends greatly on location, the local time, and the sky conditions, IPS Aurora Alerts should be considered only as an indication that space weather conditions are favourable for aurorae sightings. Reports of observations of aurorae that are sent to IPS are collected in a page which can be accessed by clicking here.

IPS Aurora Alerts are generated from K indices calculated from IPS magnetometer output.
Thresholds are as follows:
Kindex=6 High Latitudes
Kindex=7 Mid Latitudes
Kindex=8 Low Latitudes
Kindex=9 Equatorial Latitudes

The north-south component (Bz) of the interplanetary magnetic field and the Dst index may also trigger an aurora alert.

An aurora alert is issued if the Australian K index exceeds 5 or the mean Bz over the last four hours is less than -14 nT or the Dst index is less than -99.

Real-time data for the K index, Bz and Dst can be accessed from the IPS Space Weather page.
Bz data is available under the Solar Wind Speed icon (view the ACE data), K index data is available under the K-Index icon and the AusDst-Index icon displays Dst.

Information on IPS magnetometer data is available via the IPS World Data Centre at:
IPS WDC Magnetometer Data Format
